The Woman I No Longer Need to Be

Sometimes becoming isn't about adding more to our lives. Sometimes it's about gently laying down the things we've been carrying for far too long.

Autumn has always felt different to me.

The light changes.

The mornings become quieter.

The air softens.

Even here in Arizona, where summer lingers a little longer, there's a subtle shift that reminds me a new season is arriving.

And every year, I'm struck by the same quiet truth.

Trees never apologize for letting go.

They don't cling to the leaves that have served their season.

They don't question whether they're worthy of growing something new.

They simply release what no longer belongs.

I've been wondering lately what it would look like if we gave ourselves that same permission.

Not to become someone new.

But to lovingly release the woman we no longer need to be.

When I think about my younger self, I don't feel judgment.

I feel compassion.

She was doing the best she could.

She believed working harder would create security.

She believed saying "yes" made her valuable.

She believed being dependable meant carrying more than she should.

She believed rest had to be earned.

She believed asking for help was a sign that she wasn't strong enough.

She believed that if everyone else was happy, she had done her job.

I understand why she believed those things.

For a long time, they helped her navigate the world.

They helped her succeed.

They helped her survive.

But somewhere along the way, survival quietly became a habit.

And I didn't realize how heavy it had become until I started asking myself a different question.

Not...

"What else do I need to become?"

But...

"What am I finally ready to release?"

That question changed everything.

I've begun letting go of the idea that productivity determines my worth.

I'm letting go of the belief that I have to earn rest before I deserve it.

I'm letting go of shrinking myself to make other people comfortable.

I'm letting go of believing that saying no requires an apology.

I'm letting go of measuring my life against someone else's timeline.

And perhaps most importantly...

I'm letting go of believing that I have to become someone else before I'm worthy of celebrating the woman I already am.

The beautiful thing about growing older is that you begin to recognize the difference between who you truly are and who you've been trying to be.

One is rooted in fear.

The other is rooted in freedom.

The woman I'm becoming still works hard.

She still dreams big.

She still cares deeply.

But she no longer confuses exhaustion with purpose.

She understands that boundaries create room for deeper connection.

She knows that joy isn't a reward for finishing everything on the list.

It's part of the way she wants to live.

She trusts her intuition more than outside expectations.

She speaks more honestly.

She rests more intentionally.

She laughs more freely.

She worries a little less about being everything to everyone.

And a little more about being fully herself.

That doesn't mean she has everything figured out.

Far from it.

She still has moments of doubt.

She still catches herself slipping into old patterns.

She still has days when she forgets everything she just wrote.

But now she notices.

And noticing has become one of the greatest gifts of my life.

Because once you notice, you have a choice.

You can continue carrying something simply because it's familiar.

Or you can gently set it down.

Growing older has taught me that becoming isn't only about what we add to our lives.

It's also about what we're finally willing to lay down.

Maybe that's why autumn feels so sacred.

It reminds us that letting go isn't failure.

It's wisdom.

The trees don't mourn every leaf.

They trust the season.

They know that making room isn't the end of the story.

It's how new life begins.

I think we're invited to trust that same rhythm.

To release expectations that no longer fit.

To loosen our grip on identities we've outgrown.

To stop carrying burdens that were never ours to begin with.

And to believe that there is something beautiful waiting on the other side of release.

As I look toward this new season, I'm not asking myself who I need to become.

I'm asking something much gentler.

What can I lovingly lay down so I have both hands free to receive what's next?

Because the woman I no longer need to be brought me this far.

I'll always be grateful for her.

But I don't need her to carry me into the next chapter.

This season belongs to the woman I'm becoming.

And she walks a little lighter.

She smiles a little easier.

She trusts a little deeper.

And for the first time in a long time...

She knows that letting go isn't losing something.

It's finally making room for herself.
