What I'm Learning to Trust
There was a time when I thought confidence came from having all the answers. These days, I think it comes from trusting myself, even when I don't.
I've spent a lot of my life believing that clarity comes first.
Once I know exactly what to do...
Then I'll take the first step.
Once I have the perfect plan...
Then I'll feel confident.
Once all the pieces fit together...
Then I'll trust myself.
It sounds reasonable.
It also kept me waiting far longer than I needed to.
Life has a funny way of teaching us lessons we never signed up to learn.
Sometimes those lessons arrive through unexpected change.
Sometimes through disappointment.
Sometimes through beautiful opportunities we never saw coming.
And sometimes...
They simply arrive because we've reached a season where our old way of living no longer fits.
Over the past year, I've realized something I wish I had understood much sooner.
Trust rarely comes before the first step.
More often, it grows because we were willing to take it.
When I think about the biggest moments that have shaped my life, very few of them began with certainty.
Starting Positively Melanie.
Launching Living Room Talks.
Creating The Collective.
Writing journals.
Building workshops.
Sharing pieces of my heart through Soul Notes.
None of those things came with guarantees.
None of them arrived with a neatly written roadmap.
They all began with one quiet whisper:
"I think this is what I'm supposed to do."
That whisper was enough.
Not because it answered every question.
But because it invited the next step.
I've learned that inner authority rarely shouts.
It doesn't demand attention.
It doesn't compete with every opinion around us.
It simply waits.
Patiently.
Quietly.
Until we're willing to become still enough to hear it.
The challenge is that we're often looking for certainty when life is asking for trust.
There's a difference.
Certainty says,
"Show me the whole staircase."
Trust says,
"The next step is enough."
I still have days when I wish someone could hand me a blueprint for everything I'm building.
I still wonder if I'm making the right decisions.
I still question whether I'm moving quickly enough.
Whether I'm doing enough.
Whether I'm enough.
But those questions don't linger the way they used to.
Because something inside me has changed.
I've stopped believing that confidence comes from controlling every outcome.
Instead...
I'm learning to trust the woman making the decisions.
That may be one of the greatest gifts of growing older.
Not that life becomes easier.
But that we begin relying less on external reassurance and more on the quiet wisdom we've been gathering all along.
I've discovered that trust isn't dramatic.
It's built in ordinary moments.
Every time we honor a boundary.
Every time we say no without guilt.
Every time we choose rest before burnout.
Every time we tell the truth instead of what people expect to hear.
Every time we keep a promise we've made to ourselves.
Little by little...
Trust grows.
Not because life becomes predictable.
But because we begin proving to ourselves that we'll show up no matter what.
Looking back, I realize there were seasons when I trusted everyone else's voice more than my own.
Experts.
Expectations.
Titles.
Timelines.
Opinions.
Approval.
None of those voices were trying to hurt me.
But none of them knew my life the way I did.
None of them could hear the quiet whisper that had been patiently waiting inside me all along.
These days, I'm becoming much more interested in asking one simple question.
Not...
"What does everyone else think I should do?"
But...
"What feels deeply true for me?"
That question has become one of the most loving gifts I can offer myself.
Because every time I ask it...
I'm reminded that I already carry more wisdom than I sometimes give myself credit for.
Perhaps trust isn't something we suddenly discover one day.
Perhaps it's something we gently cultivate.
One choice.
One conversation.
One boundary.
One brave step at a time.
As the end of September quietly gives way to a new season, I find myself less interested in having everything figured out.
And much more interested in becoming the kind of woman who trusts herself enough to keep walking, even when the path curves out of sight.
Because I've learned something beautiful.
The goal isn't to eliminate uncertainty.
The goal is to become someone who knows she'll meet uncertainty with courage.
And somehow...
That feels like enough.
That feels like peace.
