Summer Has a Way of Bringing Us Back to Ourselves
Sometimes the most meaningful moments aren't planned. They happen around a table, beside a pool, or in the middle of a conversation that lingers long after the sun begins to set.
There is something about summer that makes me want to say yes to life a little more often.
Yes, to meet a friend for coffee.
Yes, for an evening walk.
Yes, to linger outside long after dinner.
Yes, to invite people over just because.
I think that's one of the reasons I love this season so much.
Summer reminds me that life isn't only something to accomplish.
It's something to experience.
As someone who spends a lot of time creating, writing, dreaming, and building, I know how easy it is to stay focused on the next project or the next goal. There is always another idea waiting for me, another journal to design, another workshop to plan, another page to write.
And I genuinely love that work.
But summer has a gentle way of whispering,
"Come outside for a while."
I've learned that some of my best ideas don't arrive while I'm sitting at my computer.
They find me while I'm floating in a pool.
While I'm tending to my flowers.
While I'm laughing with girlfriends over brunch.
While I'm driving with the windows down and my favorite music turned up just a little louder than usual.
Joy has a funny way of making room for creativity.
For a long time, I thought joyful self-expression meant finding one big creative outlet.
Painting.
Writing.
Singing.
Photography.
And while all of those are beautiful expressions, I've come to believe joyful self-expression is much bigger than creativity alone.
It's allowing yourself to fully inhabit your own life.
It's laughing without wondering who's listening.
It's wearing the bright dress because it makes you happy.
It's buying fresh flowers for no special occasion.
It's dancing barefoot in your kitchen while dinner is cooking.
It's gathering people you love around a table and asking questions that matter.
It's choosing conversations that leave everyone feeling a little lighter than when they arrived.
Those moments may seem ordinary.
But I don't think they are.
I think they're sacred.
One of my favorite things to do is gather women together.
Not because I have all the answers.
Far from it.
I simply believe something beautiful happens when women slow down long enough to really see one another.
I've watched it happen in my Living Room Talks.
I've watched it happen over coffee.
I've watched it happen during dinners that lasted much longer than anyone expected because no one wanted the conversation to end.
The laughter.
The vulnerability.
The stories.
The pauses.
Somehow, they remind us that we're not walking through life alone.
Maybe that's another reason I love summer.
People seem to be a little more available.
Schedules loosen.
Patios fill.
Conversations linger.
We remember how good it feels to simply be together.
And maybe joyful self-expression isn't only about expressing ourselves.
Maybe it's also about creating spaces where other people feel free to express themselves, too.
I think that's one of the greatest gifts we can offer each other.
Permission.
Permission to laugh loudly.
To cry honestly.
To dream again.
To tell the story we've been holding inside.
To become a little more ourselves every time we gather.
When I think about the life I'm trying to create, it isn't built around accomplishments.
It's built around moments.
A table full of women sharing their hearts.
A sunny afternoon by the pool.
Fresh flowers on the kitchen counter.
Music playing while I work.
A creative idea scribbled into my journal before I forget it.
Sunflowers blooming outside my window.
Those are the moments that remind me I'm not simply building a business.
I'm building a life.
And the beautiful thing is...
I think we all can.
Not by waiting for the perfect season of life.
But by embracing the season we're already in.
Summer simply makes it a little easier to remember.
