I Love the Woman I'm Becoming
Every birthday is a reminder that life isn't asking us to become younger. It's inviting us to become more ourselves.
Tomorrow, I turn fifty-six.
It's funny how birthdays change over time.
When I was younger, birthdays felt like something to count.
Another candle.
Another year.
Another milestone.
Now they feel more like an invitation to pause.
To look back with gratitude.
To look ahead with hope.
And perhaps most importantly...
To look within with kindness.
If someone had asked the younger version of me what fifty-six would look like, I don't think she would have imagined this life.
She probably would have expected everything to be neatly figured out by now.
A perfectly mapped-out career.
A predictable path.
Answers to questions that, as it turns out, don't really have answers.
Instead...
Life has surprised me.
Not always in the ways I would have chosen.
But often in the ways I needed most.
The older I become, the less interested I am in becoming someone impressive.
The more committed I am to becoming someone deeply aligned.
That's a very different pursuit.
For so many years, like many women, I measured my life by what I accomplished.
The degrees.
The promotions.
The titles.
The responsibilities.
The recognition.
None of those things were wrong.
They were meaningful chapters of my story.
But they were never the whole story.
Somewhere along the way, I began asking different questions.
Not...
"What do I need to achieve next?"
But...
"What kind of woman do I want to become?"
That question has changed everything.
I've discovered that becoming has very little to do with perfection.
It has everything to do with permission.
Permission to rest without guilt.
Permission to change my mind.
Permission to create something simply because it brings me joy.
Permission to trust my intuition.
Permission to take up space.
Permission to begin again.
Permission to choose peace over performance.
If there's one gift these past few years have given me, it's this:
I've stopped trying to earn my worth.
I'm learning to live from it.
That may be one of the greatest birthdays gifts I've ever received.
Do I have everything figured out?
Not even close.
I'm still building my business.
Still learning.
Still stretching.
Still making mistakes.
Still wondering sometimes if I'm moving fast enough.
Still dreaming dreams that feel a little bigger than my courage.
But here's what I know.
I genuinely like the woman I'm becoming.
Not because she's perfect.
Not because she's accomplished everything she set out to do.
But because she's finally living in alignment with her own heart.
She's becoming someone who notices beauty.
Someone who values meaningful conversations over small talk.
Someone who gathers women around tables instead of competing with them.
Someone who celebrates other people's light without dimming her own.
Someone who is learning that joy isn't something to schedule after all the work is finished.
It's something to weave into everyday life.
She still has things to learn.
Still has healing to do.
Still has dreams to chase.
But she no longer believes she has to become someone else before she's worthy of celebrating who she is today.
Maybe that's what birthdays are really for.
Not measuring how far we've come.
Remembering who we've become along the way.
This birthday feels different.
Not because of the number.
But because I can honestly say I'm living a life that feels more authentic than ever before.
Not easier.
Not perfect.
Just more...me.
And I wouldn't trade that for anything.
So today, I won't spend much time wishing I were younger.
I'll spend my energy being grateful that every year has gently shaped me into the woman sitting here now.
The woman writing these words.
The woman who finally understands that becoming isn't something waiting in the future.
It's happening every single day.
And for the first time...
I'm not rushing her.
I'm simply grateful to walk beside her.
There was a time when I thought confidence came from knowing exactly where I was going.
Now I think it comes from trusting the woman who's doing the walking.
Maybe that's the greatest gift age has given me.
Not certainty.
Self-trust.
And I have a feeling...
The best chapters are still waiting to be written.
